Now that the weather is warming up as we make our way through springtime, are you ready to wear figure-flattering clothing that shows off your body? Or are you trying to hide excess fat or skin around your tummy? If you have a weak lower abdominal wall (abs) that is less than flattering, a tummy tuck can help give you the contoured appearance you dream of having!
Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck
Having an abdominoplasty, more commonly called a tummy tuck, can surgically sculpt the shape and look of your abdomen. A tummy tuck effectively removes the excess skin and unsightly fat surrounding your stomach. It works by tightening the connective tissue and repositions the skin so you look toned and fit. A tummy tuck is also an option for getting rid of unsightly stretch marks and excess skin stubbornly clinging beneath your belly button region.
Why might you need a tummy tuck for the warm summer season and its more body-revealing clothing? Poor skin elasticity and weak connective tissue can be hard on your self-confidence. Other conditions that can affect your tummy include significant changes in your weight, pregnancy or a C-section, getting older, or from your family tree and natural body type. If you have unsightly skin around the abdomen, a tummy tuck can be the answer for you.
Meeting With Our Plastic Surgeon
If you are thinking about getting a tummy tuck, our plastic surgeon will be happy to meet with you. We will review your medical history, inquire about your current health, and go over any medical conditions you have previously had. We will also review your medications (and any related allergies) and any prior surgeries to make sure you are eligible for plastic surgery now.
Our doctor will discuss any weight gain or weight loss you have had recently, leading to your desire to seek a tummy tuck. Our doctor will examine your abdomen and help you better understand the risks and benefits of proceeding with a tummy tuck (like scars). It will also be your opportunity to express your expectations, why you seek a tummy tuck and what you want to look like when the surgery is complete.
Your Tummy Tuck
You will need to stop smoking once given the green light to proceed with your tummy tuck. Aside from damaging your skin, smoking lessens the blood flow in your skin, which can interfere with your healing post-abdominoplasty. To ensure the best results and that all goes well during your recovery and healing, you will need to cease smoking (before your surgery and while you are recovering). We advise avoiding medications including aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements that can increase bleeding.
Your tummy tuck can be performed safely in our outpatient surgical facility while you are made as comfortable as possible with the help of general anesthesia. Next, our doctor will remove the excess skin and fat from your abdomen and tighten any connective tissue (fascia) with stitches as needed, and the skin is shifted to create the most toned look. Post-surgery you can expect to wear an abdominal binder (a wide compression belt that encircles your abdomen) for around six weeks after surgery. It will help keep fluid buildup from forming while also giving your stomach the support it needs while healing.
