The natural process of aging gradually starts to affect the facial skin. Reduced exfoliation and collagen production, as well as other natural processes, can also affect your eyelids and the skin surrounding your eyes.
As time goes on, both the upper and lower eyelids can start to sag and droop. Some individuals will also start to develop bags under their eyes. The net effect leaves you with eyes that look tired and possibly older than you really feel.
Fortunately, there are a few options for rejuvenating the youthful and alert appearance of your eyes. After a consultation appointment at our clinic, our doctor can help you understand your options.
Many patients who are unhappy with sagging eyelids and bags under their eyes will opt for eyelid surgery. Also known as blepharoplasty, the procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and usually requires a minimal level of sedation.
Once you are comfortable, our doctor will make careful incisions following the natural creases of your upper or lower eyelids. This will minimize any post-operative scarring. A small amount of skin will be retracted from the eyelids to essentially tighten them.
Bags or puffiness under the eyes are often thought of as being related to chronic sleep issues. However, this is a misconception. Each of your eyes sits in an orbital socket. A small amount of fatty deposits under the eyes is natural and even helps support your eyes in their intended position.
Orbital fat or fatty deposits that develop beneath the ocular septum can slowly build up over the years. This process, known as lower eyelid fat prolapse, can also be addressed during the same treatment session.
The specific incision strategy that our doctor uses will be based on the amount and location of the fatty deposits.
A transcutaneous approach may be called for to access fatty deposits near the surface of the lower eyelid and often happens in conjunction with retracting skin on the outer surface of the lower eyelid.
If you have significant fatty pockets closer to the orbital socket our doctor may use an incision strategy known as the transconjunctival approach. This technique involves accessing the tissues under the lower eyelid.
Our doctor will remove and sculpt the unwanted tissues to reduce the visible appearance of bags under your eyes.
We will provide you with any necessary aftercare instructions which will likely also include a follow-up appointment to monitor your recovery progress.
If you have drooping eyelids or unsightly bags under your eyes, we invite you to call our skilled team to set up an eyelid surgery consultation.
