Spider veins are tiny capillaries near the surface of the skin that can be red, blue or purple in color. They are also known as telangiectasias or reticular vessels. Spider veins usually appear on the thighs, calves and ankles. In some women, spider veins become visible at a young age. For others, the veins may not become very visible until later. The following can contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs:
- Heredity
- Hormonal shifts
- Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing
- Pregnancy
- Weight fluctuation
If you have spider veins, Dr. Julie Kupersmith may recommend sclerotherapy. During this treatment, Asclera, hypertonic saline or other chemicals are injected into the vein. This irritates the lining of the blood vessel so the blood will reroute through healthier veins. The spider vein will then eventually fade. To reach your desired results, more than one treatment may be necessary.
Vascular lesions like telangiectasias, capillary hemangiomas and rosacea can also appear on the face, especially on the cheeks, chin and around the nose. Rosacea is inflammation and swelling of the face and can manifest in different ways. Individuals can have redness on the cheeks, chin, nose or forehead. They may also have tiny visible blood vessels as described above.
Using our state-of-the-art Icon laser platform by Palomar, we are able to treat many different vascular lesions, including rosacea, telangiectasias, capillary hemangiomas and other lesions. The light is absorbed by the blood and shrinks the capillaries, causing them to fade from view. To reach your ideal results, more than one treatment may be needed.
